In one respect ballet does conform to other dance styles, and that is that all ballets need choreography. However, in order to be a ballet, the choreography doesn't just include dance, but also drama acting and mime. Classical music also plays a role in most ballets but vocal music can also be used.
Performed first in Italy during the Renaissance period, the first ballet school was opened in France in 1661. King Louis XIV was a lover of the ballet costumes, and the dancing, and became a major supporter of this dance form and much of the ballet vocabulary that is used throughout the world today comes from this period. It should be noted that although most people consider ballet to be primarily a females' dance form, it wasn't until 1681 that women danced in the ballets. Until then it was a men only dance.
Ballet dancers were multi-performers. They didn't just dance, but they would also recite poetry and sing songs that they may have wrote themselves. Modern ballet contains the dance steps that were created in those early years, and most of these steps still have their French names.
Modern ballet centralizes around 5 basic positions, and this too dates back to Seventeenth century France when a choreographer called Pierre Beauchamp created them. Mastering these basic positions is pivotal to developing the balance and posture required to become a good ballet dancer.
Ballet has become mainstream in countries like Russia, Denmark, France and the United States. Ballet is a worldwide phenomenon. Professional ballet schools are taught in every continent in the world. New York has become the mecca of ballet dancing and it is considered the best on the globe.
Female dancers who dance on their toes with the use of specially made shoes are known as ballerinas. Although they train for years to get the balance and strength to be able to control their weight distribution, it's their shoes with foam or lamb's wool cushioning that help them achieve their graceful fluid movements. Dancing "En Pointe" isn't something that every female ballet dancer will be capable of doing, but those who can earn their title of ballerina by the dedication they put into being able to achieve the difficult balance steps.
Most ballerinas will wear a tutu on stage. These skirts, whether short or long, will allow the ballerina to look as though she is floating as she dances her way across the stage.
Male ballet dancers are called "danseurs". Danseurs never dance en pointe, they dance in soft shoes. Danseurs never dance en pointe for this simple reason: ballets were not written for male-toe dancers. Danseurs have to be in great physical shape. Lifting ballerinas on stage takes a lot of physical strength.
Ballet is still as popular today as it once was in Europe. Watching a ballet is something everyone should witness.
